About Us

The Great Friendship Project is a non-profit organisation set up in 2021 to tackle loneliness amongst young adults.

We’re on a mission to combat the growing loneliness crisis among young adults and build a more socially connected future for young people, one friendship at a time.

With the rise of social media and the increasing digitalisation of social contact, we are technically more connected than in any period of human history.

22%
the number of under-35s reporting having just one or no close friends has tripled in 10 years, from 7% to 22%.
13%
Around 13% of young adults across the UK are estimated to experience chronic loneliness every week – equating to over 1 million young adults
Yet statistically, young adults are now more lonely than ever, and in November 2023, the World Health Organisation declared loneliness an epidemic and a “pressing global health threat”.

Our Story

Our founder, David, started the project with a simple goal: to make it easier for young adults to build meaningful friendships by providing the tools and opportunities they need to form genuine connections and rise out of loneliness

After experiencing loneliness firsthand during the COVID-19 pandemic, David wanted to create spaces where others could find connection and rise out of loneliness.

What began as a social walk with just 12 people has grown into a thriving community, helping thousands of young adults find their people.

To counteract this growing epidemic, we tackle loneliness in the following four ways:

01

Community Activities

Our weekly community activities are designed to provide opportunities for young adults to meet new people, foster social connections, and find a sense of community.

02

Support

Alongside our community activities, we develop resources to help young adults rise out of loneliness and work closely with partners to offer relevant external support to those most in need.

03

Campaigns

Our campaigns are designed to raise awareness of loneliness and tackle the stigma behind it. With our partners, we work to keep loneliness on the agenda and highlight its prevalence and impact to help bring about social change.

04

Research

There is a sizable knowledge gap around loneliness, including the causes, impact, and best way to tackle it. We work with universities, think tanks, and other organisations to improve our understanding of loneliness and to inform our approach and find solutions.
